2 Years of Butterfinger
THRESHOLD INTERACTIVE
Designing for Butterfinger
Butterfinger was one of Threshold Interactive’s main clients during my tenure as a lead web designer there. I got to work on many fun projects such as the “Dude Where’s My Bar” campaign with Seth Green among many others. From rich media ads, online web games, instant messaging skins, to the Butterfinger Comedy Network site, there was always something fun to work on for Butterfinger. Below are a just a few examples of some of my design work for them.
Designs
Banner Ad Designs
One of my main tasks while working for Threshold Interactive was to design static and rich media banner ads for a whole range of different promotions for Butterfinger. From “The Fingers” animated web series, “The Comedy Showdown Contest,” to the Butterfinger and Bonnaroo Music Festival co-sponsored comedy events. I would design the main key frames in photoshop to show storyboard animations to the client for approval. Once approved, I would optimize the files, cut out the assets and place them into flash for our flash developer to code. Below are just a few example of the many Butterfinger ad banners I created.
ALTERNATE REALITY GAME (ARG)
“Dude, Where’s My Bar” ARG
While at Threshold, I had the opportunity of working on the “Dude, Where’s My Bar” Alternate Reality Game. To get the full premise of the ARG, it’s best to watch the video below, but in a nutshell, it was a contest where contestants would play different online games to solve puzzles to help Seth Green find his fictitious stolen vintage Butterfinger Bar. The ultimate winner won a real 14k gold butterfinger bar ( Which I got to hold, it was heavy and pretty cool! ). My role was to create the promotional ads for the ARG as well as to help out in the creation of the online games. I was responsible for putting together the Gigapixel image for the “Gigapixel Graveyard” game. This was the first online game to utilize Gigapixel technology. Users were tasked to find butterfinger bars hidden amongst a Gigapixel image of a cemetery.
Yahoo Instant Messenger Games
Back in the day, people used online messenger chat boards such as yahoo instant messenger. While at Threshold, I got to design a few Butterfinger sponsored Yahoo Instant Messenger games that would act like a skin within the instant messenger window so users could play as they messaged friends. Below is an example of the “Finger Chomp” game I helped design which was a game where you would flip Butterfinger bars in the air and try to catch them in the chomper’s mouth. I also designed the “Butterfinger Buzz” game which was a game where you would Buzz the hair off of different characters to reveal a special surprise.
Promotional Post Card Design
This is a promotional post card I designed that was handed out at various live comedy events around Los Angeles to promote the “Butterfinger Comedy Showdown” contest.
